Fresh Water Ponds
by Daphne, Grace and Jamie
Freshwater ponds provide water that animals need to survive. They attract insects and birds that go to the pond for a drink or to catch food.
Some animals need water for their home. For example, frogs, salamanders and other amphibians. Also fish, and some insects larvae like dragonfly nymphs.
Some animals need water to drink, like barn owls, other birds, wolves and coyotes.
Some animals like ponds because they find food inside. For example, birds love to eat fish and insects. Raccoons also eat aquatic creatures.
To build a pond, you can dig a deep hole and fill it will plastic. Or, you can use a raised container like this. We made sure that it will be safe for kids by putting wire over it. Enjoy seeing wildlife at your pond!
